What a gorgeous essay, Tanya!! Really beautiful! And you were able to somehow convey a complex situation with a lot of characters very simply and movingly without blaming anyone. Brava!
This is a beautiful piece, Tanya. So poignant and so concise. You’re able to conjure the clearest pictures and feelings by choosing the exactly right words to convey the meaning.
Lovely essay. I also loved Fiddler on the Roof, such a an easy way to be Jewish. It’s funny -I loved the song, Sunrise Sunset, but I’ve associated it with aging not marriage, even as a kid. Such an easy way to grow older.
Thanks for this, Tanya! A great model for how to write and also great to know more about you, since we have often been sharing intense pieces of our lives. As a historian, I often say that history is context and you have illustrated that so clearly here! I enjoyed it.
Tanya, this is beautiful and I can hear your voice in my head as I read it silently. It's got a Vipassana quality to it, with the music box serving as the memory keeper. And, we have more in common than I knew before. Thank you for this piece. Deborah
Thanks, Meta! It's true—there is a kind of bittersweet ease in the way the song acknowledges the passage of time. Such tenderness. I think for me it's about family—parents, children growing up, marriages coming together and, in my family's case, coming apart, then new family being formed. So glad you enjoyed it!
